Insurance To Cover Most Of Vernon IT Security Emergency
Insurance should cover most of the recent IT emergency in Vernon, officials said.

VERNON, CT — Measures taken to secure the town's internet and e-mail system amid a potential security breach will be paid for mostly through insurance, Vernon Town Manager Michael Purcaro said Wednesday.
Access was restored on Monday and Tuesday, the latter marking 10 days since the problem was discovered, he said.
The town's deductable on the insurance claim is $10,000 and the cost of the restoration — mainly through the work of IT specialists — has yet to be fully tabulated, Purcaro said.

Vernon Police Department spokesman Lt. William Meier said local officials discovered what was termed "a potential for unauthorized access" to the town's network two Saturdays ago and officials temporarily disabled e-mail and internet access as a precaution.
Purcaro on Wednesday repeated his assertion that no personal or proprietary information was accessed on either the town or education side.
