VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to the 1910-11 school year and what was then Rockville High School.

The picture popped up recently at the Ellington Historical Society.

The building at 30 Park St. now serves as the central office complex for the Vernon public school system and looks very much like it did back then.

So why would the Ellington Historical Society feature articles from Rockville High School in its archives? Well, until Ellington High School was built, students from Ellington — and even East Windsor — would take classes there. In fact, one of Ellington's most celebrated citizens, Nellie McKnight, was a sophomore during the 1910-1911 school year and would graduate in 1913.
