Picture Vernon: When Tablet Recharging Meant Fresh Chalk

VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the Picture Vernon series takes us back to a time when recharging a tablet meant getting a fresh piece of chalk.

In its archives, the Vernon Historical Society has a student slate from about 1890.

Students wrote their arithmetic, spelling words and school work on slate boards. Families were required to provide school supplies for their students and a reusable slate was more affordable than paper.
