VERNON, CT — Vernon police out-wrestled an armed man and arrested him during a disturbance at a local convenience store over the weekend.

The altercation began at 1:09 a.m. Saturday at the 7-Eleven store at 903 Hartford Turnpike, police said. Mikael Williams, 18, of Vernon, who had been banned from the store after previous incidents, was inside the establishment and refusing to leave, according to a report.

When officers arrived, he became even more confrontational, police said. Williams was yelling at officers and screamed a racial slur at an employee, a report indicates.

Police also asked Williams to remove his hands from a sweatshirt pocket several times, and he refused. After a brief struggle, Williams was handcuffed and arrested and police recovered a straight blade knife with an edge 5-inches long from the sweatshirt, according to a report.

Williams was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree breach of peace, first-degree crimimal trespass and interfering with police. He is due in court on Jan. 2, according to a report.
