Vernon Officials Negotiating To Buy Historic Kellogg House

A property that dates back to the textile heyday of Rockville might be bought by the town of Vernon.

VERNON, CT — The town is in negotiations to purchase a house that, as of late, looks like it belonged to the Munsters rather than an historic figure.

It's the Israel Kellogg House at 62 Union St. The large, Italianate home was constructed in about 1850 and was sold to by Kellogg to Rockville textile tycoon George Maxwell 31 years later, according Vernon archives.

The Kellogg house sits next to the Rockville Public Library, which was Maxwell's private library, across from his mansion that is now the front of Rockville General Hospital.

The Kellogg house is in disrepair and the yard is overgrown. Town officials are researching whether it can be saved. If the town buys it, the rear out-buildings would be razed to add much-needed parking for the library, town officials said.

It had been listed for $187,000 and an offer of $82,500 is on the table, town officials said. A potential use for the home has not been publicly discussed.
