Man Sent To Prison After $578,466 Scam Of Wallingford Woman

The man claimed to have pre-leukemia in an effort to receive money from the victim, who is an elderly woman.

MADISON, CT — James J. Cicarella, 36, of Madison, received a six-year prison sentence for scamming a Wallingford woman out of $578,466 in 2013 and 2014 by claiming to have pre-leukemia, the New Haven Register reports.

Cicarella had pleaded no contest to first-degree larceny. The victim gave him money for what she thought was to help Cicarella's medical expenses but in reality he spent the funds on a house and other personal items, the Register reports.

According to online court records, Cicarella was arrested by Madison Police on August 11, 2016 and sentenced on April 9, 2019. He was turned over to the Department of Corrections. The full sentence was 12 years in prison, suspended after six years served, followed by five years of probation.

In a 2016 Madison Patch story, Cicarella used the monies provided to buy various items of jewelry, electronics, as well as the purchase of his residence, police said at the time.
