Wallingford Council Chairman Raises Funds to Save Annual Fireworks Show

The fate of the Fourth of July celebration had been in debate with public sentiment calling on the council to restore funding for the event.

WALLINGFORD, CT — The show must go on.

With a strong public sentiment calling on the Town Council to restore funding for Wallingford’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display, Council Chairman Vincent Cervoni announced he independently raised $30,000 from local businesses to cover the cost of the celebration, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.

An online petition, Save the Wallingford Fireworks, was recently launched saying the show was in “jeopardy” because the volunteer group that had raised the necessary funds for the past six years, after the town stopped funding the event, announced it could no longer make the time commitment to ensure the tradition continued.

The petition, which garnered 854 signatures after it was launched on April 3, called on Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. and the council to adjust the town budget to fully fund the cost of the show.

The Record-Journal reports Cervoni made calls to several local businesses and received pledges of $30,000, including a $12,000 donation from the Toyota Oakdale Theatre, which requested to be named the title sponsor of the event.
