Wallingford Nursing Home Fined in Connection with Choking Death of Resident
A resident choked to death on a carrot in February.

The Village Green of Wallingford was fined $2,500 by the State Department of Public Health in connection with the Feb. 4 choking death of a resident, according to Kate Farrish of the Connecticut Health I-Team.
Farrish reports that the resident was supposed to receive a pureed diet, but a nurse found the resident unresponsive with a tray of food that included chopped, not pureed food.
Emergency crews responded and resuscitation was started and EMTs removed a carrot from the resident’s throat. The resident was transferred to the hospital and died, according to Farrish.

An investigation revealed that a nurse’s aide had mistakenly provided another resident’s tray with food that wasn’t pureed to the resident that required pureed food. The citation states that the aide reported that he or she had not received an orientation in the nursing home and floated through different units, according to Farrish.
