Abandoned Chihuahua Makes Encouraging Progress, ACO Says
In an August 3 update, Waterford's animal control officer said progress has been made with the elderly chihuahua left outside the shelter.

The story of an elderly, blind Chihuahua left outside a Waterford animal shelter has been an emotional one.
Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk spent time with the Chihuahua over the weekend.
“On Saturday, I was able to sit in the kennel with her while she ate and gently pet her, but once she was done with the food, she let me know the petting was over, however on Sunday I was able to sit in there and she actually climbed up into my lap, tail wagging and she allowed me to pet her and actually remove one of her collars before she began to get agitated,” he wrote on Facebook.

The next step is to cut the dog’s overgrown nails, which should make her feel better, Yuchniuk said.

If the dog is a candidate for adoption, Yuchniuk said he believes a rescue group will take her in and provide her with a safe environment and the care she needs.
Yuchniuk thanked everyone who messaged him and apologized if he has not replied to anyone, as the response has been overwhelming. Initially, euthanizing the dog after a required eight-day holding period was a real possibility due to the dog’s health issues and aggressiveness toward people.
Then Yuchniuk provided an August 2 update and said:
“If after eight days, the dog has relaxed and is no longer trying to bite as soon as it is touched, then perhaps the dog can be adopted out if someone wanted to take on the case.”
The most recent update from Yuchniuk contains cautious optimism.
“Let me stress the decision on this dog has not been made yet, but this is very encouraging progress,” he said in an August 3 status update on Facebook. “Please be assured that I am doing my best for this dog and will keep everyone updated.”
