Police Warn About Auto Break-Ins & Stolen Cars: 'Lock Them Up'

Police say an increase in car break-ins and auto theft in Waterford might be curbed if people keep valuables out of cars and 'lock them up.'

WATERFORD, CT—Police say car break-ins, and car theft, is an ongoing concern in Waterford and are asking residents to take valuables out of their cars and keep them locked up especially at night.

A stolen car, for example, had the keys inside it, police said. "Unfortunately, more vehicle break ins and one car stolen," Waterford Police posted to Facebook adding that the stolen car "has been recovered."

It's not clear if that car is one of the ones recovered by police in an East Lyme crash Monday night. In that case, two stolen cars were found with the suspects gone at the scene of what was initially reported as a car-versus-tree crash but was something more.

Meanwhile, Waterford police said that "between Monday, Sept 9 and Tuesday, Sept 10, items were stolen out of multiple unlocked vehicles on Rock Ridge Road, Stone Street and Paula Lane."

The now-recovered stolen car was taken from Stone Street, police said.

"We again ask that residents remove any items of value from their cars and lock them at night," police asked.

They said the "stolen car had the keys in it as well, which we strongly discourage. The past few summers the shoreline has been hit hard with stolen cars. Please do not make it any easier to take your possessions."

Police are asking that anyone with security camera footage in the areas of Rock Ridge Road, Stone Street and Paula Lane to contact Waterford Police Officer Rodriguez, badge number 79, at rrodriguez@waterfordct.org or at 860-442-9451 ext. 2259 and reference case number 2019-01632.
