Waterford High's 'Poetry Out Loud'

Wednesday night, Mike Stankov won Waterford High School's sixth-annual "Poetry Out Loud" competition, an event where students recite poems from memory and are judged on their performance.

Thirteen students participated in the event. Stankov, who cited "After Apple-Picking" by Robert Frost and "The Destruction of Sennacherib" by Lord Byron, will now go on to the state competition.

Students each read two poems and were judged by Waterford High School teachers. The event was held at the Hygienic Art Gallery in New London for the first time. It was previously held in the Waterford High School auditorium.

Jordan Waterworth finished second in the competition and Leah Doroski finished third. Waterford High School librarian Matt Cadorette organized the event.

Waterford High School students Kelsey Johnson, Josh Kelly, Kalia Kornegay, Lauren Rahr, Courtney Rowe, Yvonne Sadinsky, Sarah Stryker, Robert Vose, Jodi Weis and Sam Wilensky also competed.
