
Students heading back to class in Waterford today will see familiar faces in the hallway: police officers, who will continue school checks for the academic year.
Last year the Waterford Police Department conducted 700 mandatory walkthroughs, which are intended to help keep schools safe.
Waterford schools have always had resource officers, but in the wake of tragic events around the country the police department has increased security measures in recent years.

Police officers are required to conduct daily checks in each school. During these visits, officials also meet with school administrators and students.
Parents and community members reacted positively to news about checks resuming on the Waterford Police Department Facebook page.

Lieutenant Brett Mahoney of the Waterford Police Department said these walkthroughs give students and administrators the chance to familiarize themselves with police in case of emergencies. Students are also encouraged to ask police officers questions.
“As your local police department, we are doing what we can to provide a sense of safety and security for the kids and teachers in town,” the Waterford Police Department said on their Facebook page.
