Crash Closes Route 44 in West Hartford For 2nd Straight Day

WEST HARTFORD — For the second straight day, an afternoon crash has closed Route 44 in West Hartford near the Avon line. Things became even more complicated when a fire vehicle was involved in a crash.

Thursday's crash took place at about 3:10 p.m., police said.

State Department of Transportation officials said it was a multi-vehicle crash on Avon Mountain and West Hartford police said injuries were involved.

Both sides of the road were been closed, authorities said.

On 11/04/21 at approximately 1510 hours the West Hartford Police Department received several calls of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries in the area of Albany Ave. and Ferncliff Dr. West Hartford Police, Fire and AMR ambulance were all dispatched. Upon arrival, emergency responders located 4 vehicles, 3 of which had with heavy damage. Two occupants were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. One occupant suffered serious injuries requiring surgery, the second occupant had non-life threatening injuries.
Witnesses reported that an eastbound vehicle being operated erratically struck a second vehicle causing the chain reaction involving 4 vehicles. This vehicle was found to be operated by an unlicensed and uninsured operator. The accident cause is under investigation and charges are pending.
While responding to this accident, a piece of fire apparatus from the West Hartford Fire Department was involved in a separate motor vehicle crash with a passenger vehicle. This incident occurred at the intersection of Albany Ave. and Mountain Rd. Two occupants of the passenger vehicle were transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. No firefighters were injured.
Albany Ave. was closed between Mountain Rd. and the Avon town line for several hours. The road has since re-opened. The West Hartford Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the multi vehicle accident.

A vehicle careened several hundred feet into a copse of trees on Route 44 in West Hartford Wednesday, police said.

At about 1 p.m., the West Hartford Police Department received multiple calls regarding a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the area of 2900 Albany Ave.

Officers located two vehicles and four people with injuries, according t0 a report.

All four patients were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a report.

Police suspect that one of the drivers may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, according tp0 a report.

One of the vehicles involved left the road and went down an embankment about 500 feet into the woods, according to a report.

Traffic was tied up on Albany Avenue between Mountain Road and the Avon line for hours as utility repairs were made.
