The Mercy Community, West Hartford’s premier continuing care retirement community, is pleased to announce that the Farmington Bank Community Foundation recently bestowed upon it a $5,000 grant.
The funding awarded to The Mercy Community will go towards completing the project to build out an outdoor courtyard space adjacent to the facility’s Alzheimer’s/Dementia Special Care Community inside Saint Mary Home.
The courtyard is a safe, enjoyable environment where residents and their families can spend time outdoors, taking pleasure in activities like gardening and bird watching.

Research shows that gardens provide people with Alzheimer's the stimulation of color, smells, and sounds of wildlife. These types of thoughtful activities can increase levels of conversation between residents and better communication between residents and staff.
In addition to the courtyard project, the grant funding will also be used to establish an ongoing Art Therapy program at Saint Mary Home, designed to help residents who may be in the initial stages of dementia.“Farmington Bank has become a true local partner with us,” said William J. Fiocchetta, president and CEO of The Mercy Community. “The development of our courtyard space and Art Therapy program are fundamental to the growth of memory care services offered here at The Mercy Community, and we look forward to the opening of the new and improved courtyard this spring,” added Fiocchetta.
