Insurance Workers Roll Up Sleeves For Special WeHa School At USJ

The employees participated in a day-long community service project to commemorate Americorps' September 11 Day of Service and Remembrance.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Several employees of The Hartford insurance company went to work in West Hartford on Monday.

But it wasn't the type of work usually associated with insurance company employees.

On the anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history, Sept. 11, 2001, a group of workers with The Hartford rolled up their sleeves and shined some light on a local cause.

As a result, they spent the day sprucing up the playground area at the Gengras Center at the University of Saint Joseph, which is located in West Hartford.

The Gengras Center, founded by USJ in 1965, is a private special education school for pupils aged 5-21 and it is where USJ education/social services students study and learn about their fields.

Workers at The Hartford were participating in Americorps' September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, which aims to transform the negativity of that dark day into a bright one of community service projects.

"They were among people from around the U.S. that participated in community service projects to honor the lives and service of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001," wrote USJ in an announcement.

Participating in the program Monday were: Catherine Depino, Kaitlin Small, Hannah O’Toole, Sara Germain, Greer Hill, Toby Carmody, Jake Dumond, Beatrice Stepien, Emma Goldman and Kelly Trella.
