Man Crashes Car, Blames ‘Fake’ Person: West Hartford Police

The man, who told police he was robbed of his car at gunpoint, was found to have crashed the car into someone's porch and left the scene.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A man is accused of making up a story that was he was robbed of his car at gunpoint while taking out the trash, when he had actually crashed it into the porch of a nearby home and left the scene, according to West Hartford Police.

William Ferris, 50, called police at about 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 7 to report that while taking out the trash a “Jamaican” man approached him and pointed a gun at his face, according to police. Ferris told police the man then demanded the keys to his Acura and fled the area.

The Acura was found down the street at the Citgo gas station, located at 1137 New Britain Avenue.

Police said that after a thorough investigation and review of video footage at the gas station, it was determined that Ferris filed a false police report.

Ferris didn’t have a driver’s license and crashed the Acura into the front porch of a home on Mayflower Street, according to police. Ferris left the crash scene, parked the vehicle at the gas station and called police while walking back to Elmhurst Street, police said.

The home on Mayflower Street sustained front lawn damage and a broken pillar holding the front porch, according to police. The Building Department was notified

Ferris was arrest on charges of filing a false incident report, false statement, tampering with evidence, interfering with police, second-degree reckless endangerment and various motor vehicle violations.
