Northwest Catholic Student Honored with Civil Air Patrol Award

Gianna Weidman earns Billy Mitchell Award and is promoted to Cadet 2nd Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol, a division of the U.S. Air Force.

Gianna Weidman, a freshman at Northwest Catholic in West Hartford, was recently honored with the General Billy Mitchell Award.

This prestigious award marks one of the most important milestones in the Civil Air Patrol, a division of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary. The award is named in honor of Billy Mitchell, a significant figure in the history of airpower. To earn this award, cadets must pass comprehensive physical fitness, leadership, and aerospace tests. According to the Award Fact Sheet, “Mitchell awardees are expected to exhibit very mature behavior, to be highly responsible, and to demonstrate leadership skill.”

With this award comes the promotion to the rank of Cadet 2nd Lieutenant. As a new officer cadets continue to develop their leaderships skills by taking on more responsibility in the program, and Weidman is ready for the challenge. She also is ready to set her sights on achieving the next set of goals and earning the General Carl A. Spaatz Award.
