Obituary: Alathea King Filon, 99, Of West Hartford

She was a survivor of the 1944 Hartford Circus fire and a former teacher at William Hall High School.

Alathea King Filon formerly of West Hartford died December 24th 2017 at Caleb Hitchcock at Duncaster, a few weeks before her 100th birthday. Alathea was the daughter of the late Grace Gendron King and Robert A King and granddaughter of Rose and Louis King, a well-known Hartford cigar manufacturer.

She graduated from William Hall High School and St Joseph College and was a survivor of the 1944 Hartford Circus fire. Alathea was a teacher at William Hall High School leaving to become an assistant buyer at B Altman & Co in New York City. She married Robert D Filon in 1945.

Alathea was active in the Suburban Women’s Club of West Hartford, The West Hartford Belles, the Woman’s Exchange, The Early Bird Bowling League, The Town and County Club, The Seed and Weed Garden Club, and former longtime member of West Farms Golf League. She was a long time member of the Niantic Bay Yacht Club and a Crescent Beach summer resident for over 60 years.

Alathea volunteered for many years at both Hartford and St Francis Hospitals.

She is survived by her daughter Linda A Filon of West Hartford and Crescent Beach, and grandsons Joseph (JR) Fowler IV of Akron, Ohio and Robert Filon Fowler of West Hartford. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Robert D Filon in 2008.

There are no calling hours. A mass will be celebrated on Friday (Dec. 29th) at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St Joseph College, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford, CT 06117 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
