Obituary: Nancy Dale Woodworth, 84, of West Hartford

She wrote a restaurant column for the West Hartford News and was co-author of multiple editions of 10 regional food and travel guidebooks.

Nancy Dale Woodworth, 84, of West Hartford, beloved wife of Richard M. Woodworth, died unexpectedly at home Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 one week short of their 57th wedding anniversary.

Born Jan. 20, 1933, in Montreal, to Lindsay Percival and Dale Browne Webster, she was a graduate of Mount Royal High School and McGill University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma social fraternity. After university, she hitchhiked across Europe for six months with a friend and worked as a secretary in London, England, and later in Montreal. She met her husband on a ski lift at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. They moved in 1961 to Rochester, NY, and lived in Pittsford NY until 1971, when they moved to West Hartford.

She wrote a restaurant column for the West Hartford News from 1973-80 and was co-author of multiple editions of 10 regional food and travel guidebooks from 1978 to 2006, starting in 1978 with Daytripping and Dining in Southern New England and Weekending in New England. Her favorites were Getaways for Gourmets in the Northeast, and Waterside Escapes in the Northeast.

For 25 years, she organized the New York or Bust Club, a monthly subscription chartered bus excursion to New York. She served earlier on the boards of the Woodridge Lake Association and the Hartford Stage Company Women’s Committee. She was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church and formerly of the Hartford Ski Club and the Hartford Chapter of Delta Gamma Alumnae.

She enjoyed spending 25 winters beside the ocean in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and 18 summers beside the Bay of Fundy in St. Andrews, NB. Her interests included travel, cooking, reading and Broadway show-going.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jay Lindsay of Brooklyn, NY., and Cameron John and wife Monica Smith, both with the State Department in Tel Aviv, Israel; a brother, Andrew Lindsay Webster of Calgary, Alta, and a sister-in-law, Ainslie Webster of Montreal.

A memorial service was held Nov. 25 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
