Police Hosting National Take-Back Day this Weekend in West Hartford

National Take Back Day is a collaborative effort to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets.

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. (April 26, 2017) – The West Hartford Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will work together to host National Take Back Day. The event will take place Saturday, April 29, according to a release.

National Take Back Day is a collaborative effort between both departments and state and local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets across the country. (To sign up for West Hartford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Collection activities will take place in front of the West Hartford Police Department on Raymond Road from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Participants can simply drive right up and drop off their medications.

The program is anonymous and free of charge. Volunteers will be on hand to take items from vehicles.

The National Take-Back Day provides an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. These drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

This one-day effort is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.

The program is anonymous. Prescription and over the counter solid dosage medications (tablets and capsules) are accepted.

Intra-venous solutions, injectable medicines and needles will not be accepted. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are also not a part of this initiative.
