Police Issue More than 700 Infractions During Distracted Driving Campaign in West Hartford

The West Hartford Police Department concluded the first part of their 2017 campaign against distracted driving; get the results here.

WEST HARTFORD, CT - The West Hartford Police Department concluded the first part of their 2017 campaign against distracted driving on April 30. The campaign ran from April 4 to April 30.

A second campaign will take place in August of 2017. The campaign was made possible with a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office. (To sign up for West Hartford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

West Hartford officers issued 715 distracted driving infractions to motorists during the month of April. Officers additionally cited 41 violations which included seat belt violations, speeding, driving under suspension and registration violations.

One DWI arrest was made April 13, as well as two infractions for possession of marijuana on April 11 and 18 as the result of stopping a motorist for a distracted driving violation. A stolen car was also recovered April 6 by officers on the distracted driving detail, which resulted in two arrests.

The enforcement details were deployed around the main thoroughfares in West Hartford including Park Road, New Britain Avenue, Farmington Avenue, North Main Street and Albany Avenue. Officers were also deployed around school zones, construction zones and any roadway where officers observe any distracted driving.

Under Connecticut’s cell phone and texting law, violations involve fines ranging from $150 for a first offense, $300 for a second violation and $500 for subsequent violations.
