Relaxed Back Sitting: Why You Will Hurt Your Neck!

A recent research study on the "best" position to sit at your desk to help with low back pain missed a whole section of your spine, namely your neck. The following is my critical thoughts on their study ( here is the link to the study article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6187080.stm).

What the study boils down to is that sitting in a relaxed position - see the picture in the thumb nail is the best for low back pain.

Reality is this, look at the head and neck position in the "recommended" position. It's abnormal, this position basically forces you into a Cervical Structural Shift which is outside normal range. Normal range is your skull (head) less than an inch translated anterior or forward from your shoulders.

This is easy to see, have somone place one finger on your shoulder and one at your ear, ask them to see if your head is more than an inch forward. If your head is more than an inch forward - this is ONE indicator of an abnormal structural shift of your spine. Not good, in fact deceptively bad for your health.

This is a primary structural condition that often results in common secondary conditions, you may also know as symptoms such as;

neck pain
headaches
arm pain (upper and lower)
degenerative disc disease
degenerative joint disease
Muscle spasm
Muscle tension

This study's advice is like telling someone to exercise and don't worry about the MacWoppers and doughnuts - Incomplete.

What you need is a strategic plan to optimize your spine and protect against abnormal structural shifts. Our customized plan  does not include relaxing like you are at the beach in Cabo sipping a nice margarita (although, maybe that could work as well).

What does our strategy entail - a lot....

This is what I provide to my patients, a customized strategic plan to enhance and then protect your spine so you do not have to depend on:

Medications
Surgeries
Contraptions of all sorts for spine problems
Repeated trips for the SAME problem, to massage therapy, PT or conventional chiropractic

This is when knowledge without direction is going to lead people down the
the wrong path. Sure your back will temporarily be relieved and you will have created additional structural condition in your neck.

Have a great day...
