So far, a local group's fundraising campaign to plant more trees in West Hartford has exceeded its goal by nearly 58 percent.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A holiday season effort to raise cash to help West Hartford plant trees in town has more than exceeded its goal, but folks can still donate for the effort.

The West Hartford Tree Project's crowdfunding campaign, which the Town of West Hartford announced Dec. 16, was hoping to raise $2,000.

But as of Monday morning, the amount raised online was $3,155, far exceeding what the project hoped for.

Still, donations can be made as the more trees in a town, the merrier.

Whatever is donated to the project will be matched by Sustainable CT's Community Match Fund, which then donates to the cause per town dollar for dollar, essentially doubling what's raised.

Sustainable CT is a multi-town nonprofit whose goal it so promote more sustainable policies in government that are kind to the environment, with the tree project being a trademark program supported by Sustainable CT.

The goal of the effort is simple, to ensure West Hartford's "tree canopy" at time where much-needed economic development is the desirous route for the future.

This effort aims to maintain the town's tree count by purchasing and giving out tree seedlings and, even, more developed trees in pots ready for transplanting.

They will go to anyone interested in these arbor additions to their property.

The trees are purchased through donations and grants, but they're given away to anybody who wants them for free.

"All trees will be purchased from CT Conservation District as in years past. We anticipate that Eversource will again donate tree and shrub plugs," reads an announcement from the Town of West Hartford.

"This year, we will not only be giving away bare root tree seedlings, but also slightly older, potted trees."

This is the third year of the project, with the effort resulting in 1,000 trees being planted in 2020 and 1,500 trees being given out in 2021.
