WEST HARTFORD, CT — If you happen to see a local cop working the beat with chattering teeth, it's probably just leftover chills following a successful Sunday dip.

The West Hartford Police Department raised $8,160 Sunday during its first “Penguin Plunge” fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut.

The event, held March 29 in the parking lot of West Hartford Town Hall, marked the department’s inaugural plunge.

Participating officers entered a mobile pool filled with cold water to raise money for programs serving athletes with intellectual disabilities across the state.

The fundraiser had originally been scheduled for January but was postponed due to severe winter weather.

Despite the shift to early spring, conditions remained cold for participants.

In a statement, the department thanked donors and community members who attended to support the effort.

Proceeds from the event will support Special Olympics Connecticut’s services and athletic programs
