Anti-Marijuana Bill In Westport Falls In Close RTM Vote: Report
The bill would have banned the sale of recreational pot in Westport if the state were to legalize it.
WESTPORT, CT — A bill that would ban the sale of recreational marijuana in Westport - if the state decides to legalize it - failed in a close vote this week before the Representative Town Meeting, reports Westport Now.
Following a lengthy debate, the bill was voted down 18-16 on Wednesday, primarily because such a local law cannot supersede a state law.
Currently, the town has a medical marijuana dispensary on the Post Road East, which was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission last year.

RTM members Greg Kraut and Jimmy Izzo, the two who championed the banning bill, argued in part that the medical marijuana dispensary was a Trojan Horse to gain a foothold in Westport for future recreational sales.
