Cuba and the U.S.: Cracks in the Facade

Julia Sweig, Ph.D. and former Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies and Director for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, will be the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston’s featured speaker at its April 30 meeting at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport. Dr. Sweig will speak on the very timely topic of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations. Coffee and donuts start at 9:45 AM; Dr. Sweig’s talk at 10:30 AM.

Dr. Sweig holds a B.A. from University of California and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She spent nearly sixteen years with the Council on Foreign Relations where she established a reputation as an eminent scholar of international relations in the Americas. She is the author of Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know (2009, 2013), Friendly Fire: Losing Friends and Making Enemies in the Anti-American Century (2006) and numerous publications on Latin America and American foreign policy. Her Inside the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro and the Urban Underground (2002) received the American Historical Association’s Herbert Feis Ward for best book of the year by an independent scholar.

Early this year, Dr. Sweig joined the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas as a Senior Research Fellow.
