Protecting Your Spine when Shoveling Snow

Snow shoveling can be a real pain! We are all at risk of back and spine injuries in the winter months just trying to clear the way.

William Conaway, MD, a spine surgeon with Hartford HealthCare’s CT Orthopaedic Institute at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, has some tips to save your spine.

Warm up before shoveling. “it’s usually early in the morning when I shovel,” said Dr. Conaway. “And we’re anxious to get it over with. Practice a little with the shovel before you stop lifting.” He also suggests investing in a lightweight shovel.
