Original story: WESTPORT, CT - A Richmondville Avenue couple is in custody Monday following a tense standoff with Westport police where the two barricaded themselves inside their home.

Officers were called to the scene at about 10 a.m. on a report of a civil dispute, and the couple, Kyle and Carrie Owen, were spotted in the driveway. The two quickly went inside the home once police arrived and would not open the door.

"Kyle then came to the door holding a hatchet and refused to come outside," said Lt. David Farrell in a statement, adding that the couple's juvenile child was in the home with them. "Kyle was yelling and swearing at officers and was seen walking aggressively in the house."

Officers closed off the road and evacuated residents from the homes nearby, and called in the tactical Southwest Regional Emergency Response Team (SWRERT).

SWRERT negotiators made contact with Carrie and after about a half hour of negotiations, they talked the Owens into coming out. Once outside, Kyle made a break and tried to run back into the house, but was tackled officers.

The pair were being processed at Westport Police Headquarters Monday afternoon.

Charges were still being determined, and the incident remains under investigation, according to police.
