Key to Awesomeness: Wilton High School track star Tim Becker received all-state recognition and surprisingly surpassed the 21-year-old record in the 3200 meter at the state open, set by Peter Anastasio in 1990, this past winter, 9:42 to 9:38.

"I was very happy," the senior, who will be competing at the University of Richmond in the fall, said.

Becker qualified for the state open with a sixth place finish where he placed fourth to move on to New Englands. "It was kind of a huge surprise," he said.

The 800 and 1600 are also part of his repertoire as is cross-country, which he will also be doing at the college level.

Other past note-worthy credentials include a 4:28 mile (improved from 4:31-and one which he plans to lower even more), fourth in 3200, second-team all-FCIAC in cross-country, 10 varsity letters, and all league in the 800, 1600, and 3200 for spring track.

Becker has come a long way in the sport after initially focusing on basketball. When basketball didn't pan out as expected, track became the focus.

"He has great perseverance," Wilton High School boy's track coach Ted Farah said in regards to the athletes' hard work, character, and good family background. "He's become a real leader," Farah said.

The runner has learned how to become more effective with each race. "He's really become a student of track and field," he said.

This is true in the classroom setting as well. "He has a good family with parents who love him."

Becker likes running for the benefits of always having the opportunity to improve while also knowing and helping the team as a whole. "It's a fair sport," he said.
