Stamford Spikes Lady Warriors

The WHS Girls volleyball team lost in straight sets to Stamford High School on Monday.

The inability to hold momentum along with crucial errors cost the WHS girls volleyball team on Monday evening as the team lost in straight sets to Stamford. The team lost by scores of 26-24, 25-12, and 25-18 as their season record dropped to 2-14.

WHS had a chance to pick up a critical first set victory but untimely errors and a missed dig ended up hurting the team.

“The first game was absolutely pivotal,” said WHS head coach Heather Schlitz. “Whoever wanted to take the momentum and run with it was going to win the set and Stamford did a good job of that.”

After losing the second set, WHS quickly went down 6-0 before reeling off seven straight points to give themselves a 7-6 lead. During the seven-point run, Sophomore Amanda Stanzione had seven service points (14 service points for the match) and Senior Stephanie Boyles had several kills (11 kills for the match).

“Amanda and Stephanie did a great job of keeping their heads in the game,” said Schlitz. “They both have a lot of skills.”

Other bright spots throughout the Warriors’ run included Junior Lindsay Waack, who had five assists (10 for the whole match) and Senior Melissa Lombardi, as she prevented a few potential points for Stamford.

WHS would end up losing the lead as Stamford came back with five straight points and never looked back as Wilton struggled to make up ground. The team mishit a few serves, struck the ball out of bounds several times, and left too much room in the middle.

“This season has been a process for us,” admitted Schlitz. “While we have been able to correct the mistakes we were making in the beginning of the season, we have unfortunately traded that for other mistakes.”

Even though the team is having trouble finding ways to win games, Schlitz believes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to her team.

"This is a good group of girls who are learning to come together,” said Schlitz. “We have a lot of skills that will hopefully allow us to fix things.”

The WHS volleyball team will be back at it again on Wednesday night on the road against Ridgefield at 6 p.m.
