Driver Flees Rollover Crash In Wilton, Later Charged: Police

The driver was not at the scene when officers arrived following the early morning crash, police said.

WILTON, CT — A Norwalk man is facing charges after police said he fled the scene of a rollover crash on Danbury Road and returned hours later.

Officers were dispatched around 12:07 a.m. April 5 to the area of Danbury Road and Old Mill Road on a report of a single-car rollover, according to Wilton police.

Before officers arrived, the driver had already left the scene on foot, police said.

Police identified the driver as Vitaliy Kotsaba, 25, of Norwalk. Officers attempted to contact him by phone and at his residence, and a K9 track was conducted with assistance from Fairfield police, but those efforts were unsuccessful, authorities said.

Kotsaba’s father later came to the scene and was asked to help contact him, police said.

About six hours after the crash, Kotsaba arrived at Wilton police headquarters, according to authorities. He told officers he had been driving south on Danbury Road when another vehicle crossed into his lane, causing him to veer off the road and crash.

Kotsaba told police he was not injured and left the scene because he was nervous about getting in trouble. He also said his phone had died and he walked to Norwalk to charge it, according to the report.

Police said no injuries were reported in the crash.

Kotsaba was issued a misdemeanor summons charging him with evading responsibility (property damage) and failure to drive in the proper lane, police said.

He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on April 15.
