I remember the boys coming home from school, and me asking them, “So how was school today.” All I would get was “good” or “fine”. I’d then ask, “What did you do?” All I would get is “nothing” or “the same old thing.” Boy, was it ever frustrating!

These questions are there to help kids think about their day, and be able to share more with you. They work hard all day at school to “hold it together”, so having relaxing time after school is important for many kids. It’s probably best to give them some down time and a snack before asking a question. I found that walking side by side and car rides were the best times to start conversations. As we help them open up and talk more, we are building stronger relationships. We can then be there for our kids when they really need to talk to us.
