Lady Warriors in Tough Spot After Loss

The WHS Lady Warriors Varsity soccer team struggled to create and cash in on their offensive opportunities in a 1-0 loss to the Fairfield Warde Mustangs at Fairfield.

The WHS Lady Warriors soccer team made their quest for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) playoffs tougher by losing to the Fairfield Warde Lady Mustangs 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Throughout the match, WHS had trouble creating any kind of offense and when they did get close to the goal, they either kicked it wide or turned it over to the skilled Lady Mustangs.

“We are struggling right now,” said WHS soccer coach Scott Neumann. “The competition is extremely tough and we’re in a rough stretch of the season.”

Trying not to make excuses, Neumann admitted that his team had limited opportunities and when that happens, the other team is able to take advantage of it. The Lady Mustangs did that 10 minutes into the first half when a cross pass was missed by Warriors’ goalkeeper Elizabeth Reda and put into the empty net by a Mustang forward.

“The Mustangs’ goal was a simple miscommunication by our players and goalkeeper,” said Neumann. “That’s just the way high school soccer goes sometimes and you cannot teach every single thing that is going to happen.”

While WHS played strong defense throughout the match, the team was only able to generate a handful of shots on goal, with most of them coming from 20 to 30 yards outside the box.

The Lady Warriors missed a big opportunity with eight minutes to go when freshman Casey Pearsall put a corner kick just over the heads of incoming Warriors’ forwards.

“We had limited opportunities in tonight’s game,” said Neumann. “Unfortunately, when we did get close to the box, we could not do anything with the ball and struggled to put the ball on goal. We are really struggling to get shots.”

With just two games to go in the season, Neumann believes that his team still has a chance to qualify for the FCIAC’s, despite currently sitting five points out of the eighth and final spot.

“We still have a chance to make some noise in the FCIAC,” said Neumann. “Six through nine are really close and we need to find a way to pick up some points in our next two games.”

The Lady Warriors will be home tomorrow night to take on Westhill at 6 p.m.
