WILTON, CT — Wilton residents will enjoy a slight tax break in the next fiscal year, as the Board of Finance has tentatively approved a reduction in the mill rate for the 2020-21 budget.

The board met Monday night via web conference to approve a 3.77 percent decrease in the mill rate, down to 27.4616. The mill rate is property tax rate per $1,000 of the assessed value of your property.

The reduction is borne of a 1.75 percent decrease in the operating and capital budget, down to $32,915,724 from the current year, and a flat — zero percent — increase in the schools budget, set at $82,344,563 for 2020-21.

It wasn't always going to be that way. Pre-coronavirus, the Board of Selectmen had proposed a 2 percent increase over the current spending plan.

Although unanimously approved by the Finance Board on Monday, the new budget won't be official until it is formally passed in a meeting set for Tuesday night.
