New Canaan Blows Out Warriors

The WHS football team failed to contain New Canaan quarterback Turner Baty as he scorched the Warriors for 5 touchdown passes in a 42-7 loss.

When you make mistakes against a good football team, they are going to make you pay.

That is what happened on Friday night in Wilton as the WHS football team was drilled by the top team in Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC), New Canaan, 42-7. The loss dropped the team’s record to 2-5 with three games left to go in the season.

New Canaan senior quarterback Turner Baty threw five touchdown passes and passed for over 320 yards.

“He knows how to put balls in the right spots,” said WHS head coach Bruce Cunningham. “He is a great drop-back quarterback who has solid backs, receivers and a special line in front of him.”

This was a game in which WHS actually held a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter, thanks to 2-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jackson Wilbur to senior wide receiver Jeff Liebowitz. Up until that point, WHS had played extremely well by generating some offense, playing tight defense, and keeping New Canaan off the scoreboard.

That all changed in the second quarter when New Canaan came out and scored four touchdowns thanks to Baty, who threw touchdown passes of 7 yards, 25 yards, 34 yards and 37 yards.

“We made a lot of defensive mistakes during those possessions,” admitted Cunningham. “That team is way too good to make mistakes against and there is a reason why they are No. 1 in the FCIAC.”

Cunningham also pointed out his team’s inexperience and how a team like New Canaan is able to find it and take advantage of it.

“As soon as we got out of position on one play, their offense found it the very next play and made us pay for it,” said Cunningham.

New Canaan would go on to add two more touchdowns in the second half, including a 54-yard touchdown pass by Baty.

“We need to be ready to adjust quickly,” said Cunningham. “We need to grow up a bit football maturity-wise and know the situations better.”

The Warriors will look to bounce back next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the road against the second best team in the FCIAC – Staples.
