Nugent Leads Wilton Boys Lacrosse To Easy Win

Warriors snap two-game slide with a 15-2 win over the Westhill Vikings.

Sophomore attackman Chris Nugent had his best game in a Wilton uniform, scoring three goals and adding three assists, as the Warriors defeated Westhill, 15-2, Saturday in high school boys lacrosse action.

Coming off two two recent losses to national powerhouse St. Anthony's in Long Island (14-6) and local rival Darien (9-3), Wilton overwhelmed Westhill with six goals in the second quarter to take a 9-0 lead.

"I think my game is really improving," said Nugent, the Warriors' team leader. "We are all, as a team, working on our passing."

Mike Francia, who quarterbacks the offense, stayed on the sideline most of the second half after adding two goals and four assists.

Wilton played with its backup goalie Sam Somers, who also is the starting center for the Warriors' football team.

"I really like the game, it is pretty addictive," said Somers, who came off the field at end of the game with a big smile on his face.

Warriors coach John Wiseman felt the Warriors would have had a chance to win against St. Anthony's and Darien if not for one bad quarter in each contest.

Still, Wiseman remains upbeat about Wilton's prospects heading into the second half of the season.  The Warriors (5-3), who defeated Barlow, 13-7, on Monday, have won consecutive games for the first time this year after alternating wins and losses in their first six contests.

Westhill sophomore goalie Wade McManus contributed a whopping 30 saves in a losing effort.

"The young man will be twitching in the morning from stopping so many shots," their coach said.
