Over $20,000 Raised for Weston Memorial Day 5K Road Race -- Family Sponsor Drive Planned for April 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Center --

WESTON, Conn., March 30, 2015 -- “We’re almost at the halfway mark for raising $50,000 for this year’s Weston Memorial Day 5K Road Race and Walk,” said Race Committee Chair Roberto Ordonez. As part of the ongoing effort to raise money and volunteers for this important town event, organizers are hosting a Family Sponsor Drive at Weston Town Center on Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As part of the drive, individuals and families are being encouraged to register to race, donate money and write their names on T-shirts. Sponsor names will be printed on race-day T-shirts for all race participants to receive as part of their registration. Additional sponsors are needed for this year’s race and walk events being held on Saturday, May 23, during Weston’s Memorial Day weekend festivities. The race is Weston High School PTO’s largest fundraiser. Proceeds go to current and future school educational initiatives and enhancements.

Last year more than 700 participants put on their running shoes for the race/walk. An additional 80 children from kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the Kids-Fun-Run that included a 100-meter sprint, and 400- and 1,600-meter runs around Weston High School’s track. This year’s Kids-Fun-Run event will be expanded to include an obstacle course and inflatable slide.

“We’re really excited about reaching the $20,000 mark in donations. Our goal is $50,000. So we need additional people and companies contributing to the cause. Please feel free to share this with your friends, family and colleagues or anyone you know who would be interested in helping out this great cause for Weston High School,” added Ordonez, during a recent planning session. “We need all the help we can get as far as volunteers and sponsorship dollars leading up to this terrific town event.”

2015 marks the 22nd year this event has been hosted by Weston High School’s PTO. The PTO allocates proceeds from the event to fund a variety of enhancements to the school curriculum, including computer software, teacher training, and equipment for the arts and athletic programs. In addition to registration fees, corporate and individual donations support the PTO’s mission for quality in education and further enhancement of Weston schools.
