'Significant' Home Oil Spill in Wilton Prompts DEEP Action

The spill occurred on or about Dec. 20, and released a "significant amount" of oil into the ground, according to the Health Department.

WILTON, CT — The Health Department is currently monitoring the remediation activities at the site of a home heating spill at 166 Nod Hill Road.

The spill occurred on or about Dec. 20, and released a "significant amount" of oil into the ground, according to a letter written by Director of Health Barry Bogle to residents dated Dec. 30.

The remediation is under the supervision of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, according to Bogle. DEEP has established a 500-foot radius around the site, inside which the agency is monitoring contamination levels and residential wells over the next four weeks.

"At the end of the first month an evaluation of the activities will be done and a determination made as to the way forward and relative sampling frequency," Bogle wrote.

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. is collecting water samples and testing them for any oil contamination. Any residential well that tests positive, regardless of the contamination level, will receive bottled water, according to Bogle.
