Veterans Memorial Green Project On Track, Still Needs Funds

Donations for Wilton's Veterans Memorial Green Project came in steadily until until the last few weeks of August. Now the memorial stands about $10,000 short of its goal.

First Selectman Bill Brennan said he believed the donation drop off was due to many families leaving town for late summer vacations. He hopes they will pick up again now that most have returned for the school year, helping to make sure the project is fully funded by its slated Veterans Day completion date.

"We certainly could use more contributions," Brennan said. "We've had a drop in contributions in the last couple weeks."

The site work for the project, which began in mid-August, is well underway. Brennan said the construction is proceeding on schedule, the town has ordered the monuments and the flagpole, and the engraving has been ordered and double and triple-checked.

The base of the memorial was expected to be completed by the first week in September and the flagpole should be planted in the near future. The town is hoping to have most of the construction done soon so that they have time finalize plantings around it to have the site presentable for its dedication on Veterans Day.

So far, the town has raised around $60,000, with over 300 individual gifts from citizens and organizations, alike.
