Warriors Sacked In Opener
The WHS Football Team lost a close opening game Thursday night to Trumbull.
The skies finally cleared after a few days of rain, the air felt properly crisp for a football game and the stadium lights were beaming over Veterans Memorial Stadium. Unfortunately for the WHS football team, Trumbull came to play.
The first half was fairly evenly matched. Trumbull went up by a touchdown early but the Warriors came roaring back and evened the score just before halftime on a short pass from Senior Quarterback Jackson Wilbur to Junior Back Mike Francia.
The second half, however, was all Trumbull. They moved the ball consistently down the field with the running game and some well-timed passes and went ahead 13-6 in the third quarter, despite missing the PAT.

And that was all the Eagles would need. Wilton looked somewhat out-of-sync in the passing game and was stymied when they tried to move the ball on the ground. With a six point lead, Trumbull was able to control the pace of play and run out the clock, culminating in a hard-fought victory on Wilton's home turf.
Wilton has a young team and new Head Coach Bruce Cunningham told Patch reporter Patrick Hoffman before the season began that there would be some growing pains. But it was encouraging to see the typically run-based Wilton offense attempt to move the ball through the air and play a tough Trumbull team so closely right up until the end of the game.
