Weston Memorial Day 5K Road Race and Kids Fun Run is 12 Days Away -- Kids Fun Run Features New Inflatable Obstacle Course and Slide --

Weston Memorial Day 5K Road Race and Kids Fun Run May 23 at Weston High School starting at 7:30 a.m. Pre-register at www.weston5k.com.

WESTON, Conn., May 11, 2015 -- The course is set. Runners and walkers, young and young at heart, are getting their equipment ready for the 22nd annual Weston Memorial Day 5K Road Race and Kids Fun Run, being held Saturday, May 23, rain or shine. There’s only 12 days left before the event and participants and sponsors are still being sought. Donations are ahead of last year’s and registrations are up as well.

“We’re really excited about the upcoming Memorial Day 5K Road Race and Walk, and the Kids Fun Run,” said Race Committee Chair Roberto Ordonez. “It will be especially entertaining this year. As part of the Kids Fun Run, we are introducing an inflatable obstacle course with a slide and other challenging components to keep children excited about completing the event.”

The Kids Fun Run, which starts at 8 a.m., includes a 100-meter sprint, and 400- and 1,600-meter runs around Weston High School’s track. Participants from kindergarten through 5th grade will receive a complimentary race-day T-shirt and other giveaways at the event. Refreshments, crepes and other foods and musical entertainment will be available during the events.

The Weston Memorial Day 5K road race is a fast, rolling, scenic loop through residential and historic sections of bucolic Weston. It features disposable ChronoTrack bib-tag timing, mile splits, refreshment and water stations on a USA Track & Field certified course. Free race T-shirts will go to the first 500 registrants.

Weston High School sophomore Grace Goodrich who will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” will kick off the day’s events. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to finish around 9:30-10. The course will affect the following streets limiting traffic access starting at 7:30 a.m.: all of School Road, Lord’s Highway from Newtown Turnpike to Old Hyde, all of Old Hyde, Norfield Road to Weston Road, and Weston Road to School Road.

First, second and third-place winners (male and female) will take home $100, $50 and $25 cash prizes and medals respectively at the end of the race. Additional category winners include Youth (up to 8 years of age, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14); Teens (ages 15-19); Open (ages 20-29); Submaster (ages 30-39); Master (ages 40-49); Grandmaster (ages 50-59); Veteran (ages 60-69); and Invincible (ages 70+).

To avoid long lines on event day, it is suggested to register for the race online at www.weston5k.com. Event organizers also will be hosting in-person, registrations on Saturday, May 16, at Weston’s Town Center. Additional pre-registrations and race packet/bib pick-up will be available on Thursday, May 21, and Friday, May 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Weston High School cafeteria. Race-day registrations will start at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Weston High School, located at 115 School Road in Weston, Conn. 06883.

A number of food vendors will be on site during the events including Christophe’s Crepes of Fairfield, La Rouge by Aarti of Westport, and Organo Gold Coffees. For those participants in need of message therapy before or after the race, Performance Physical Therapy of Westport has offered its services free of charge.

2015 marks the 22nd year this event has been hosted by Weston High School’s PTO. The PTO allocates proceeds from the event to fund a variety of enhancements to the school curriculum, including computer software, teacher training, and equipment for the arts and athletic programs. In addition to registration fees, corporate and individual donations support the PTO’s mission for quality in education and further enhancement of Weston schools.
