Wilton Baseball Still Alive In FCIAC Playoff Race

Warriors blanked 1-0 in final regular-season game against Greenwich

The Wilton baseball team received a reprieve, at least for one day, thanks to the weather.

The Warriors concluded their regular season Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Greenwich, but they remained alive in the FCIAC playoff race when McMahon's game at New Canaan was postponed later Saturday. The Rams also are scheduled to play at Trumbull on Sunday.

The outcome of New Canaan's remaing two games will determine the final pairings for the FCIAC tournament,  which has been pushed back one day and won't start until Tuesday. The semifinals are now slated for Thursday and Saturday at Harbor Yard.

Following the results of Saturday's game, seven of the eight playoff teams have been determined, led by St. Joseph (16-2),  Danbury (14-4), McMahon (13-4) and Staples (14-4).

Greenwich and Norwalk (4-3 winner over Ridgefield) clinched with victories on Saturday while Fairfield Warde got in despite a 2-0 loss at Danbury.

New Canaan needs to win one of its last two games to clinch a playoff spot. If the Rams lose their final two, Wilton will claim the final playoff berth.

The Warriors managed only three hits against Greenwich ace Dylan Callahan on Saturday. Paul Merolla was the hard-luck for the Warriors as he surrendered only three hits while giving up one unearned run.

Meanwhile, the Wilton softball team was eliminated from the FCIAC playoff race with a 9-8 loss to Trinity Catholic on Friday. The Warriors could have clinched a playoff spot with a win but those hopes ended after after the Crusaders rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wilton finished in a three-way tie for eighth with Fairfield Ludlowe and Staples at 10-8, but Ludlowe won the tiebreaker because the Falcons defeated the Warriors and Wreckers during the regular season.
