Wilton Field Hockey Dominates Norwalk

In the team's final game before the playoffs, the WHS girls field hockey team shutout Norwalk High School by a score of 4-0.

In what could be a first round matchup in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference (FCIAC) playoffs, the WHS girls field hockey team outplayed, outhustled, and outworked Norwalk High School in a 4-0 shutout victory. With the victory, WHS finished the regular season with a 9-3-1 record heading into the postseason.

WHS controlled the play throughout the game, getting to loose balls, keeping possession of the ball, putting shots on goal and playing tight defense.

“Overall, I felt like we put it all together tonight,” said head coach Deirdre Hynes. “We knew what we had to do entering into the playoffs.”

WHS got on the board five minutes into the game when senior Daisy Hanna banged in senior Sheridan Finnie’s pass in the slot to give WHS a 1-0 lead.

Just over 16 minutes later, WHS would score again to go up 2-0. Senior Amy Dummond scored from in front of the goal on her third shot after taking a pass from senior Danielle Noonan.

Throughout the first half, WHS was everywhere. They had seven shots on goal, played strong defensively by only allowing one shot, and controlled the ball for most of the half.

The team would continue their strong play in the second half as they struck early once again. Sherridan Finnie picked up a loose ball in front and scored on her second shot attempt to give her team a 3-0 lead.

“In the beginning of the season, we had trouble finishing,” admitted Hynes. “Tonight, we were able to finish our plays and score some goals because of it.”

With 12:33 left to go in the second half, WHS closed out the scoring as Noonan deflected a Dummond shot from the top of the box, giving the team a commanding 4-0 lead.

“We were not able to tighten up our defense,” said Norwalk head coach Kyle Seaburg. “We were standing around too much admiring their play.”

Dummond was strong on both sides of the field throughout the game as she generated several scoring opportunities by going hard to the net while making sure to get back on defense.

“They dribble hard, they pick the ball up well and they are always well-coached,” admitted Seaburg.

There is a good chance that these two teams will meet again on Friday, this time in a playoff showdown at Wilton.

“Wilton is a tough opponent,” said Seaburg. “Hopefully, we will be seeing each other again on Friday.”
