Wilton Picks Up Second Straight Victory

Three second half touchdowns and a terrific effort on defense lead the WHS football team to victory.

WHS football team senior running back Ryan Leddy rushed for 201 yards as the Warriors shut out Bassick High School 21-0 at home on Friday night.

Time and time again, Leddy was able to find holes in Bassick’s defense and break for big plays, including a 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a 21-0 lead.

“Ryan is running his tail off,” said head coach Bruce Cunningham. “He lays it all out there, wants the ball all the time and with him, we were able to find something more than what we thought we originally had.”

Even though Leddy rushed for 63 yards in the first half, WHS and Bassick went into the third quarter tied 0-0.

“We struggled in the first half to make a big passing play,” said Cunningham. “It was still part of the process of trying to figure out who we are and what we do best.”

Warriors’ senior quarterback Jackson Wilbur righted the ship to begin the second half when he opened up their offensive drive with a 62-yard pass to junior wide receiver Matt Reyes-Guerra-Dunn to give WHS a 7-0 lead.

“Jackson was able to make a big play for us to open up the half,” said Cunningham. “That was exactly what we needed to jump start the rest of our offense.”

On their next offensive possession, Wilbur would find Reyes-Guerra-Dunn again, this time with a 9-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead.

Cunningham admitted that while Wilbur’s two touchdown passes were terrific, a lot of credit had to be given to the team’s offensive line. The offensive line was able to provide protection to both Wilbur, giving him plenty of time to pass the ball, and Leddy, giving him plenty of room to run the ball.

“Our line is definitely coming along,” said Cunningham. “We struggled early in the season with our running game because our team was trying to adapt to the new system. Now, we are doing a much better job with our assignments.”

The coach also talked about how strong his team’s defense was, sacking the Bassick quarterback more than a handful of times while also providing strong coverage.

“We did not give up a big play tonight,” said Cunningham. “We were able to lock down Bassick’s receivers, force their quarterback to throw underneath and intermediately and we did these things out of necessity.”

The Warriors will be back at it again next Friday night at home against New Canaan High School at 7 p.m.
