Despite being in only its second year of competition, the Wilton Youth Wrestling Club has become a force to be reckoned with on the Connecticut wrestling scene.

Foreshadowing great things to come, 13 members of the club made a powerful statement about the future of Wilton wrestling at the Oxford-Derby Beginner’s Tournament on Sunday at Oxford High School.

Competing in a field of 275 young wrestlers, Wilton grapplers took home six gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Earning gold medals for Wilton were Everett Andersen, Dominick Caratazzolo, Caleb Forland, Nicholas Rende, Christopher Sweeney and Wooder Thoby. Trey Dexter, Matthew Johnson and Stephen Kendra brought home silver, and Matthew Mackay and Jack Santomero won bronze medals.

The team, which was led by coach Tom Dexter with assistance from high school wrestler Bo Santomero, put on an impressive display with several pins and numerous major decisions. The wrestlers were not intimidated by the competition, which included large contingents from traditional Connecticut powerhouses Danbury, New Milford, Fairfield and Southington.

After ending Norwalk's eight-game winning streak, the Wilton girls basketball team swings back into action on Tuesdy when it hosts McMahon at 5:45 p.m. at the Fujitani Field.

Wilton improved to 8-3 overall and 8-2 in the FCIAC with last Thursday's 48-40 win over the Bears. The Bears are a solid fourth in the FCIAC standings and just one-half game behind first-place St. Joseph in the FCIAC East.

Maddy Fulton scored 12 points and Casey Pearsall added nine against Norwalk as the Warriors rallied from a 34-31 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

McMahon (3-10, 3-8) is coming off a 62-37 loss to Westhill and is pretty much out of playoff contention.

The Wilton boys also are coming off a win over Norwalk as the Warriors upset the Bears 67-62 in overtime on Thursday in a major shocker.

Wilton improved to 4-6, doubling its victory total from last season, and the Warriors will have an opportunity to pick up another win against a McMahon team that is an enduring a nightmarish season.

Austin Wilbur poured in 27 points for the Warriors against Norwalk. Max Mudsley added 15 points for Wilton while Chris Nugent had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Senators dropped to 1-10 following Friday's 80-52 drubbing to Westhill.
