After shooting a 77 in the third round of the New England Amateur championship at the Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I., fomer Wilton resident Tommy McDonagh was forced to withdraw before the final round Wednesday to catch a 10 p.m. flight out of JFK for Ireland.
McDonagh is playing in the South of Ireland Amateur, which begins Saturday. He was tied for fourth after the second round of the New England Amateur on Tuesday.

McDonagh, the former St. Luke's standout who now plays out of Shorehaven in Norwalk, was playing in his first tournament since winning the Connecticut Amateur and Ike Campionship in a span of four days last month.
Connecticut's Jeff Hedden won the tournament, posting a 72-hole total of 13-under par 267. He finished six shots ahead of Massachusetts' Richy Werenski.

Among other local players, Cameron Wilson, who also plays out of Shorehaven, finished tie for at 2-over 282. He shot rounds of 73 and 70 on Wednesday.
Darien's Peter Ballo, who plays out of Woodway, finished in a tie for 36th with four-round total of 300.
Ballo, who was tied for 11th after Tuesday, struggled on Wednesday with rounds of 75 and 84.
Wilton, which defeated Darien National 12-3 Sunday in the finals of the 11-year-old District One baseball tournament on Sunday, opens play in the section one tournament on Wednesday at Bridgeport's Blackham School with a dramatic 3-2, nine-inning win over Annex.
Wilton plays Yalesville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. as pool play continues.
After an off day Friday, Wilton faces district three winner Seymour on Saturday and district two winner Fairfield American on Sunday. After pool play, the top two teams vie for the title on Tuesday.
