The Wilton White third grade football team entered the FCFL playoffs with only two blemishes on its record – a tie to Fairfield and a loss to New Canaan Black. It erased one of them last Saturday night with a 20-13 victory over Fairfield.
Wilton’s interior defensive linemates Matt Gulbin, Michael Coffey, Henry Sell and Blake Pagano-Walley set the tone early and stuffed the Fairfield ballcarriers on successive plays.
On the game’s first third down, defensive end Austin Cameron put a punishing hit on the Fairfield quarterback for a loss. Wilton's offense took the field next and tried to throw the Fairfield defense off its game with the speed running back combination of Sean Sullivan and Blake Pagano-Walley. Nice blocking by Henry Sell, Jason Bivona and Jack Fielden helped push the ball into Fairfield territory, but ultimately the drive stalled.
After Wilton's defense forced another three-and-out, the offense started to assert itself. A nice series of runs by Pagano-Walley, behind the strong offensive line of Charlie Hastings, Jake Eagan, Austin Cameron, Joshua White, Matt Gulbin, Henry Sell and Michael Coffey, had the Wilton team down to the Fairfield 4-yard line. A quarterback sneak by Everett Andersen behind his hard-nosed center, Hastings, put the White team up, 6-0.
With seven minutes left in the second quarter, Wilton struck again. Running back Blake Pagano-Walley found a hole in the left side of the line after lineman Henry Sell crushed his defender and raced to a 40-yard touchdown. Quarterback Andersen made the two-point conversion successful on a nifty sweep to that same left side, giving Wilton a 14-0 lead.
Fairfield was not done yet, however, and opened up its offensive playbook with several successful pass plays. It scored with just over a minute remaining in the first half to pull within 14-7.
Following an interception, Fairfield pulled within 14-13 and elected to go for a two-point conversion. However, linebacker David Cote preserved Wilton's lead at halftime when he knocked Fairfield's ballcarrier out of bounds just before he crossed the goalline.
Wilton's offense sputtered for most of the second half with three uncharacteristic fumbles, but its defense kept Fairfield out of the end zone.
With four minutes left in the game, Pagano-Walley, following a key block by Connor Healey, ripped off a 45-yard gain deep into Fairfield territory. for a first down deep in Fairfield territory. On the next play, Pagano-Walley ran through a hole created by Jason Bivona for the clinching score.
Defensive tackle Matt Gulbin sealed the win, sacking the Fairfield quarterback on fourth down with 43 seconds remaining.
Wilton advanced to the semifinals, where it will have a chance to avenge its lone loss of the season against New Canaan Black. The rematch is set for Saturday at Wilton High School.
