Wilton Fourth Grade Blue Beats Ridgefield

The Wilton Blue fourth grade football team defeated Ridgefield Orange 24-6 to improve to 6-0 in the Fairfield County Football League.

The game began as a defensive battle. Wilton Blue shut down Ridgefield's opening drive,  forcing a fumble on Ridgefield's 28-yard line. The Wilton defense was anchored by strong play from its defensive line and tackles by Reilly Sullivan, Kyle Hyzy, R2 Dirocco and Jack Savarese.

The Ridgefield defense stopped Wilton on four downs. Wilton responded in kind with a tough three-and-out defensive stand, highlighted by a key tackle by Cole Snyder. After Ridgefield's punt, Wilton advanced the ball on several short runs, but Ridgefield kept Wilton out of the end zone, and the first quarter remained scoreless.

Wilton Blue jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the second quarter on touchdown runs of 8 and 50 yards by Hyzy, then extended its lead on Jack Dirocco's 60-yard TD burst early in the second half.

Wilton forced Ridgefield to punt for the fourth time of the game, highlighted by tackles from Matthew Dooley, Patrick Burke, Dirocco and Savarese.

Ridgefield stepped up the pressure and Wilton turned the ball over on downs. Despite great tackles by Hyzy and Dominick Polito, Ridgefield scored on a short run, only the third touchdown of the season allowed by Wilton Blue.

Ridgefield forced Wilton Blue to punt on its first possession of the fourth quarter. Wilton's relentless defense did not waiver with stellar play from Zeyher, Andre and Noah Levi.

The Warriors forced the second fumble of the game, which was scooped up by Matthew McVey. On Wilton's final drive, Andrew Travers hauled in a 40-yard TD reception to complete the scoring.

Wilton boasted solid offense and defensive play from Jack Mariani, Brady Kuczo, Drew Saumier, Jack Lenz and Steven Tuin. This is the second straight game in which Wilton Blue’s solid line play allowed 13 different players to contribute to the running and passing attack.

The Wilton White fourth grade football team blanked the Fairfield Wildcats 21-0 to improve to 6-0 in the Fairfield County Football League.

The Warriors' first possession was a carbon copy of many of their drives this season.

Running behind the offensive line of Cooper Heinemann, Camilo Galeano, Srephen Kendra, Eric Zhang, Erik Lebek and D.J. DiCostanzo, Austin Andersen ran for 8 yards, Drew Phillips for 12 yards, Niko Kouvaris for a few and then Phillips streaked around end for 26 yards and a touchdown behind a crushing block by Griffin Morris (video link –http://youtu.be/wtImnpf5HCs ).

The two-point conversion was good as Phillips threw to Kouvaris in the corner of the end zone (http://youtu.be/4jb-iPPfNO4 ).

The Warriors' defensive front of Morris, Nick Sheehan, Oliver Shulman, Trent Hollings, Jack Santomero and Heinemann dominated on the next possession.  On the first play,  Hollings dropped the Fairfield ballcarrier for a 4-yard loss and linebacker Ben Leung recovered a fumble at the 17-yard line on the next play.

The Warriors went right to work with Schulman, Hollings, Tate Falta and Dominick Caratozzolo taking turns running the ball.  On 3rd-and-goal from the four, quarterback Ryan Healey rolled right looking for a receiver but tucked the ball in and scooted into the end zone for another Warriors' touchdown (http://youtu.be/lmvPkKCd6YI ).  Griffin Morris bulled his way up the middle for the conversion to put Wilton up 15-0.

The Warriors' final touchdown came on another long run by Phillips, who ran behind offensive linemen Dean Griffin, Zhang, Galeano and Shulman. Niko Kouvaris secured the shutout with an interception in the final minutes.

Wilton White Third Grade beats New Canaan Red

The Wilton White third grade football team defeated New Canaan’s third grade Red team 18-8 on Saturday

The game started with Wilton’s defense on the field against the New Canaan offense.  As has been the case all year, Wilton’s defense stood out. Defensive ends Joshua White and Austin Cameron contained the running backs while linebackers Davis Cote, Sean Sullivan and Quinn Wiseman made sure there was no chance of a big play.

On third down, New Canaan threw its first pass of the game, but Wilton’s secondary was not fooled.  Alex Smith and Michael Gruseke stayed home and blanketed the receivers with Gruseke nearly making an interception.

Wilton’s offense started the game with a balanced running attack that featured quarterback Everett Andersen and running backs Sullivan and Michael Coffey.  Nice blocking by Connor Healey, Cameron, White, Henry Sell, Daniel Gruseke, Charlie Hastings, Blake Pagano-Walley and Matt Gulbin helped push the drive down field.

The featured play of the drive was a beautiful 4th-and-10 pass from quarterback Andersen to Coffey just beyond the first down marker.  The offense line blocking and the tough running paiddividends later in the game as it seemed to take its toll on the New Canaan defenders.  The opening drive went into the second quarter, but ultimately stalled.

New Canaan’s offense seemed to settle down on its next possession and was moving the ball down the field.  But several nice tackles by Pagano-Walley showed Wilton’s defense might bend but wouldn’t break.

Henry Sell led the interior linemates with Jason Bivona and Jack Fielden forcing New Canaan to the outside on runs.  Llinebackers Sullivan, Wiseman and Cote were there to stop the gains from being too damaging while cornerbacks Alex Smith, Spencer Dean and Daniel Gruseke made several impressive tackles in the secondary.

The good tackling seemed to awaken something in Blake Pagano-Walley, as on Wilton’s next offensive possession he ran three consecutive hard runs into the teeth of the New Canaan defense.

Offensive linemates Jake Eagen, Matt Gulbin, Michael Coffey, Charlie Hastins, Henry Sell, Joshua White and Austin Cameron started to impose their will on the New Canaan defensive line.  And with wideout Logan Brady and running back Davis Cote making key down field blocks, Pagano-Walley found the edge on the left side and scored the game’s first touchdown.

Wilton’s offense picked up where it left off after halftime and marched down the field again.  Running back Sullivan broke off a beautiful run through a huge hole created by the line and ultimately gained 25 yards after his fullback Coffey put a New Canaan linebacker on the turf.  This set up a quarterback keeper that transformed from a nice gain into a touchdown after left end Cameron took out two New Canaan defenders with amazing downfield blocking.  With both extra point attempts failing the score was 12 – 0.

The Wilton defense smelled victory and on New Canaan’s next possession, end Joshua White, cornerback Alex Smith and linebacker Davis Cote make consecutive punishing tackles on New Canaan sweep attempts..  Defensive tackle Matt Gulbin demoralized the Rams with a hit for a loss to end the drive.

Wilton’s offense took over and after two tough runs by running back Cote, the speedy and crafty Andersen followed Logan Brady's block into the end zone again for a 18-0 lead with two minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

With Wilton’s defense lsmothering the New Canaan offensive attack, Wilton's offense was able to play smash mouth football to run out the clock.  Running back Luke O’Neil took a handoff up the middle, securing yardage and allowing more time to elapse

New Canaan avoided the shutout with a touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 22 seconds remaining.

There was little movement this weekend in the New Haven Register media high school football top 10 poll with Xavier (4-0),  Masuk (4-0) and Ansonia (3-0) holding on to the top three spots.

No. 4 Hand (4-0) and No. 5 New Canaan (4-0) flip-flopped with the Tigers climbing one spot and the Rams dropping one position. Last week, New Canaan rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat McMahon, 36-33.

New London (3-0) held on to the No. 6 spot, followed by Staples (3-0), which also was No. 7 last week, Windsor (4-0), Bunnell (4-0) and North Haven (4-0).

Four FCIAC teams also are receiving votes, headed by Darien (4-0) at No. 13. The other FCIAC teams receiving consideration are Greenwich (3-1), Norwalk (4-0) and Trumbull (2-1). Norwalk has a showdown this week at home against New Canaan.
