Despite a marked size disadvantage, the Wilton third grade White football team defeated Ridgefield 21-8 to improve to 7-0.
Ridgefield knew it was in trouble from the first series when Wilton's defensive front of Griffin Morris, Trent Hollings, Jack Santomero, Oliver Shulman, Nick Sheehan and Patrick Coulter smothered the running backs and held the Tigers to no gain, forcing a punt.
The Warriors promptly marched 41 yards for a score with Drew Phillips rushing for 21 yards on one play and Austin Andersen for 13 on another as the offensive line of Erik Lebek, Stephen Kendra, Eric Zhang, D.J. DiCostanzo, Dean Griffin, Cooper Heinemann and Griffin Morris manhandled Ridgefield's larger defensive front.
Phillips scored the TD and added the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 midway through the first quarter.
After forcing a second three-and-out, the Warriors again drove quickly downfield. Niko Kouvaris led the offense with a nifty 22-yard reverse from his wingback spot. Running behind a block from Camilo Galeano, Kouvaris later scored from the 5. Matthew LaManna added the extra point, putting Wilton up 15-0 early in the second quarter.
On play after play, the Ridgefield backs were pummeled by the Warriors' linebacking corps of Cole Stephenson, Phillips, Ben Leung and Austin Andersen. The game was a highlight reel of big hits by Phillips, Andersen, Tate Falta, Morris and Hollings.
When Ridgefield took to the air, defensive backs Dominick Caratozzolo, LaManna and Kouvaris were there to foil every attempt. The defense forced three fumbles with recoveries made by Sheehan, Phillips and Morris.
With now Ryan Healey calling signals the Warriors drove 60 yards on five plays for their final score in the second half. Phillips had runs of 11 and 12 yards and Andersen rumbled for 25 on another play. Phillips scored the touchdown to put the Warriors up 21-0. Ridgefield managed a late score to avoid the shutout.
Wilton White concludes the regular season on Saturday (5 p.m.) against New Canaan Red at New Canaan High School.
Wilton Fourth Grade Blue beats Darien, 24-6
The Wilton Blue fourth grade football team defeated the Darien Blue Wave 24-6 on Sunday to improve to 7-0.
Wilton took charge on the first play from scrimmage as Reilly Sullivan ripped off a 50-yard run and scored a few plays later behind the blocking of Jack Lenz, Jack Savarese, Matthew Dooley, Clyde Tinnen, Dominick Polito and Andrew Travers.
After the touchdown, Wilton’s defensive line, led by Savarese, Dooley, Matthew McVey, Lenz and Patrick Burke, forced a punt. Kyle Hyzy then cut to the outside and raced down the sideline to score Wilton's second touchdown.
Wilton’s tenacious defense and hard hitting by R2 DiRocco, Jack DiRocco and Cole Snyder frustrated Darien. Early in the second quarter, Jake Zeyher took the snap from center, rolled to his right and turned up field running past multiple defenders to give Wilton its third TD.
On Darien's next possession, Tinnen's hard hit on the quarterback caused a fumble, which was recovered by Burke. One play later, Polito scampered 15 yards for Wilton's final touchdown.
Wilton’s defense continued to dominate behind Brady Kuczo, Jack Mariani and Alex Buse, who also recovered a fumble late in the game.
Wilton played without Noah Levi, who was injured in last week’s game but was on the sideline to cheer on his team. Wilton concludes the regular season next week against Fairfield.
Wilton Fifth Grade Blue Blanks Weston
The Wilton fifth grade Blue football team defeated Westport 21-0 at home on Saturday to improve to 6-1.
After an early defensive battle against a determined Westport team, Wilton used a balance of offense and defense to pull away. Offensively, Kyle Phillips led the charge by running for two touchdowns and completing a 28-yard pass to Matthew Graham. who ran past Westport’s secondary on a deep route to score Wilton’s third touchdown.
During the first half, Tyler Previte and Andrew Luciano sparked Wilton's offense with long runs of 28 yards and 15 yards, respectively. Capping off the offensive attack by Wilton was a leaping catch by Dean DiNanno to secure a 2- point conversion.
Thomas Costello and Cole Barnes also broke off strong runs from scrimmage. The line of Matthew King, Jack Ferguson, Max Colburn, Richard Nolan and Nicholas Koenigsberger provided blocking and pass protection to fuel Wilton’s offense.
Wilton’s penetrating and hard hitting defense pushed back Westport on more than six plays, led by tackles from Jonny Wu, Billy Ronk, Jiffy Lesica, Ethan Masek, Andrew Santacroce and Liam Jenkins.
Wilton's Joey Seaman recovered a fumble deep in Westport territory that set up a score. Malcolm MacGregor and Ben Grass added to Wilton's balanced attack with strong play on both sides of the line.
Wilton concludes its regular season on Sunday at Ridgefield.
