Wilton was suposed to kick off its season on Friday, but the game was pushed back because the team didn't get in enough practice time in the wake of Hurricane Irene.

Wilton was among the communities hit hardest by the storm, forcing the school to remain closed until the day after Labor Day. Practice for all Warriors' sports was cancelled for 10 days while the school was closed.

It remains to be seen how the layoff affects the Warriors on the field, but they are trying to build on last season's 4-6 record, which doubled the team's win total from 2009 (2-8).

While senior Sean Carroll returns as Wilton's starting quarterback, the Warriors graduated 12 seniors, including linebackers Ryan Phillips and Clay Helms.

Helms and tailback Ned Hemmerle, who also graduated, rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season.

Wilton also lost punter wide-receiver Matt  Reyes-Guerra-Dunn, the Warriors' leading receiver last season.
